A Guide To Creating Your Own Morning Routine
A morning routine is a great way to help you have more focus throughout your day and allows you to start your day with activities that can boost your confidence and bring you peace. Too often we wake up and hit the snooze button, rush to get ready and just get on with our day. This, at its core, is an awful way to start a day. Which is why creating and sticking to a morning routine is so beneficial to our lives. It is a way for us to add balance to our lives and enjoy our mornings.
While morning routines are great to help us to stay focus and get tasks done, I believe that the most important thing is to have fun with them. Yes, having a morning routine can help you stay more productive throughout the day, but it is really about allowing yourself to start each day with a positive mind, body and spirit.
One thing that I learned from my personal journey with morning routines is that you don’t have to do anything that you don’t want to do during your morning routine. There are so many people on the internet telling you how to start your day, and I think that is a great place to start, but eventually, you need to create a routine that works for you. For example, generally, I am not the type of person who enjoys a routine, I like having a little spontaneity with my day and life. So, when it comes to my morning routine, I give my self the freedom to do different things each morning. Every day I wake up and work out and drink a glass of hot water with lemon, and then I have a list of activities that I know help me to thrive and do one, a few or all of them depending on how I am feeling.
You also don’t have to wake up earlier to have a morning routine. No matter what time you wake up, you can always make time for yourself and enjoy some activities that are going to make you feel good. Obviously, if you have a busier day you might have to wake up earlier then usual, but for the most part, it doesn’t matter what time you get up at.
If you are ready to great your own morning routine, use these guidelines to help you have peaceful, happy mornings.
How To Make A Morning Routine
1. Hydrate
A great thing to do right when you get up is to drink water. I am a huge believer in staying hydrated, don’t be dehydrate and sad when you can be hydrated and happy.
2. Do something for your body
Getting up and moving your body is a great way to get your metabolism working, give you a boost of endorphins and help you to stay focus during your day. If you have a type of exercise that you love to do, add it to your morning routine. If you haven’t really worked out before, try different types of workouts in the morning. You can do some yoga, go for a run, go for a hike, do a home work out, or just put some music on and have a dance party.
3. Do something for your mind
Working out our minds is just as important as working out or bodies. Instead of picking up your phone and filling your mind with the news, gossip and everyone’s political opinions, fill your mind with thoughts and ideas that are going to make you feel good. Some great activities to help your mind is to read a book – you could read a personal development book, the bible, other religious texts, or any other non-fiction or fiction book that you are interested in. You could also list things that you are grateful for, write out and say positive affirmations, practice visualization and meditation.
4. Do something for your soul
When making a morning routine I think that it is important to add an activity that nourishes your soul. This could be taking time to be spiritual by meditating, praying, worshiping, reading religious texts, practicing yoga etc. If you are not a spiritual person do something that makes your heart happy. You could sit on your porch with a cup of coffee, get out in nature, watch the sunrise, listen to the birds, do something creative, journal, make a gratitude list etc.
5. Do something that you love
What do you love to do? Why not start your day doing that thing! If you love to cook, make yourself a good breakfast. If you love drawing, make time to draw in the mornings. If you love to play the guitar, bring it out and play in the morning. If you love geology, look at some rocks or read about rocks in your morning routine.
Some Things I Do In The Morning
As I mentioned above, because I don’t love to do the same thing every day, I have a list of things that I enjoy doing in the morning and depending on how I feel I do all or some of them. Here is a list of things that I incorporate in my morning routines.
- Drink a glass of water
- Mediation
- Read
- Journal
- List 3 – 10 things I am grateful for
- Yoga
- Work out
- Run
- Visualization
- Affirmations
- Drink a cup of hot water with lemon
- Wash my face
Again, remember, that there is no right away to have a morning routine. There most important thing is that you are waking up and doing activities that make YOU feel good. Don’t worry about waking up at 5:00 AM, just do you!
Wishing you happy mornings,

Great advice! During the stay-at-home orders, I was able to make my morning routine my habit. It starts with meditation, then yoga, then my journal … then I make myself a good breakfast and watch a bit of an old NFL game from the 70s. It sounds strange, but I love that last part!
I’m going to add a glass of water to the beginning of this, starting tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
That sounds like a great way to start the day! Let me know how the glass of water changes your life!
