8 Things To Do in Jasper

I remember the day I stepped foot in Jasper – I felt like I was breathing air for the first time. It was such a fresh, pure, light feeling; like my cells were officially waking up. For 6 months, I had the pleasure of experiencing the incredible mountains, wildlife and beautiful blue lakes of Jasper everyday. I would step outside and be greeted by elks, deers and their babies. If I ever found myself in a funk, all I needed to do was look up and stare at the magnificent beauty around me, and any negativity would diminish very quickly.  From growing up in the busy city of Toronto, it was hard to even comprehend I was in the same country – this place feels like a fairy-tale, I would think. While I became more accustomed to this lifestyle, the breathtaking moments never went away.

Applying to work at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge for summer of 2017 was a completely haphazard decision –  after realizing the Christmas before graduation that I was not ready to succumb to the corporate grind. My sister told me about her friend, Kristen, who worked at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge 5 years earlier. I knew nothing about Jasper and I was pretty ignorant about the west coast of Canada. But the idea of doing something new really excited me. So without much thought, I applied and accepted the position. Only after arriving at the airport in Edmonton it dawned on me – wait, where am I? what am I doing here again?

I am so glad I made the quick decision to head to Jasper. I have so many incredible memories with amazing people who continue to be in my life today. From beach days, road trips, camping, staying out late to watch the astonishing northern lights, Jasper was an unforgettable experience. I recommend experiencing it to everyone.

Here is my guide on the top things to do and see in Jasper:

Of the 6 Mountains in Jasper, this one has to be my favourite climb. You can either hike this mountain, or take the tram for a quick ride up and down – but in all honesty, the hike up is so enjoyable and makes the view from the top only that much better! Taking about 3 hours to the top, this climb provides a wide range difficulty (choose your own route) and scenery which includes grass, trees, boulders, and waterfalls. We were lucky enough to go on a beautiful sunny day where the incredible panoramic view could be fully taken in. A stunning view of Jasper’s town, MountEdith Cavell, Mount Robson, and Jasper’s 4 gorgeous major lakes. The top also has a cute café where you can relax and enjoy a bite before descending down. We spent about an hour at the top of the mountain before taking the tram down (which is another plus to this hike!). Overall though, Whistlers Mountain is a really great way to see all that Jasper has to offer.

Located in the Ice Fields, Mount Wilcox is a beautiful hike that reminded me a lot of the Swiss Alps. We went in the middle of June and the mountains were covered in a blanket of snow. Throughout the hike you can see beautiful wildflowers, meadows and a spectacular view of the Canadian Rockies. After a steady incline of 1-2 hours, the ground begins to level until you are trekking through a massive ice field. What’s great about Wilcox is that for most the hike you are absorbing an incredible view without having to turn your back on any of it. You are surrounded by the snowy Rocky Mountains no matter the season.

I came here camping with a group of 8 and it was perfect! After a day spent hiking up Mount Wilcox, we set up our site at the small campground. With a small fee for campfire, you have everything you need – clean water tank, lots and lots of firewood, bear proof garbage, and washrooms. The lake is simply stunning. The gorgeous mountains reflecting off the water, is a site you could

stare at for eternity. The temperature really drops in the mountains, so please layer up

The Miette Hot Springs is directly next to the Sulphur Skyline trail, so I recommend visiting them on the same day. Plus, dipping into these hot springs after a 2-3 hour hike up Sulphur Mountain is one of the most relaxing and rewarding things you can do! The Miette Hot springs are the hottest springs in the CanadianRockies. The water naturally comes down the mountains and is cooled before going into the two hot pools. It is also about $9 to get in and there are clean shower/locker rooms, and a snack bar. It is located in a pretty remote spot so in order to get there you drive for a while amongst windy roads. Nonetheless, it’s beautiful. I saw my first bear (close-up!) on the way here. In my opinion, the best part about these Hot Springs is the incredible surrounding view of the mountains. I could’ve stayed in that pool all day letting my body fully relax, while taking in the scenery.

If you are looking for a nice stroll with gorgeous views, Lac Beauvert is everything you need. Wrapping around the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, I had the privilege of taking this route almost every day for the 5 months I worked there. It is so peaceful and the clear water with the mountain reflection is breathtaking. The entire loop is about 45 minutes and you are likely to run into a few Elk along the way! You can also enjoy Lac Beauvert by taking out a paddle board or canoe which you can rent from the The Fairmont.

If you are in Jasper, it is quite necessary to visit Banff and Lake Louise, partly because the drive itself will be a highlight of your trip maybe even your life! While there are so many incredible stops along the way, Peyto Lake is a must. This lake, vibrant jade coloured lake is so stunningly, it looks unreal. It is only 15 minutes to get from the lake to the parking lot, but the incline is a little steep for some, so use caution. This spot is also very popular, so best to go early in the morning if you can.

The Emerald Lounge at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge looks out to stunningLac Beauvert and is one of the best places to relax with a cocktail or dine. The menu is not cheap – your looking at about 3X the price compared to what you might pay in town, but this view is undeniably worth it. Plus, the cocktails are delicious – I ordered the espresso martini last time I went and it was perfect. When you go, sit at the bar and be served by Angela because she is the best!

This must-see spot is exactly what it sounds like – a journey through a valley of 5 lakes. The entire loop takes about 1-2 hours to complete and the route takes you through 5 lakes that vary in beautiful shades of blue, greens, and turquoise. It is considered one of Canada’s natural wonders. The trail provides moderate exercise with some elevation gains and steep descends. Each lake is worth the journey but the last two are truly unforgettable.
