Things To Do In Incredible Croatia

I lay on the beach with the sun shining down on me. Several yards away I hear the roar of the ocean waves beating rhythmically against the shore. On either side of me is sand for miles. And I’m happy- really, genuinely happy.

I mean, who wouldn’t be, right? I was laying on the beach in Croatia, living the dream. You’re probably thinking, “Wow, Croatia? I’ve heard of it but don’t really know where it is and I’ve definitely never considered it to be a tourist destination.” Well, I’m here to tell you, friend, that Croatia is INCREDIBLE and it might not be a tourist destination, yet, but it should be a destination you go to. Let me put it to you this way: I studied abroad my junior year of college in France. While I was there, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to 10 different countries and over 30 different cities. When I returned back to the United States, everyone asked me what my favourite place was. As you might imagine, it was and still is an impossible answer, however, Croatia always stuck out in my mind. Always.

Croatia is the country in between Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina; east of Italy and west of Greece. Croatia has everything- mountains, the sea, historic buildings, waterfalls, beautiful forests, rolling hills, islands, vineyards, and so much, much more. There’s an Italian and Greek influence, particularly in their food. And, everything is so reasonably priced that you won’t have to spend a fortune to have an amazing experience-  what I’m saying is that you don’t have to stay in hostels and eat the cheapest food there to be able to visit on a budget. I mean, what more could you want?

When I was there, I stayed in two cities: Split and Zadar. Both were equally beautiful, historic and unique.

In Split, I recommend to:

  • Visit Diocletian’s Palace, church and crypt
  • Walk around the harbor and revel in the beautiful view
  • Tour the ethnography Museum to see traditional Croatian clothing and artifacts
  • Go to the beach, because it’s always a good idea!
  • Explore the beautifully historic Old Town and go into the stores
  • Visit one of the numerous museums and galleries
  • Try the local cuisine. Yum!

In Zadar, I recommend to:

  • Explore old town and check out the stores
  • Listen to the sea organ (it’s right on the harbor where waves crash against the shorewall. The waves go into the sea organ and it creates beautiful music)
  • Visit the Monument to the Sun, which is a bunch of glass panels on the ground in the shape of the sun that soak in the sun’s energy all day. It uses that energy from the sun to light up the panel in different colors at night. It’s a dedication to the sun and it’s gorgeous!
  • Walk along the harbor (and watch the sun set or rise!)
  • Try Croatian wine!
  • Spend some time on one of the many beaches
  • Check out the nightlife, if that interests you!

Not far from Zadar is Plitvice Lakes National Park. It’s basically a huge park full of waterfalls. Waterfalls everywhere you look and everywhere you go. Now, waterfalls are always beautiful and picturesque, but these waterfalls? These waterfalls are surrounded by lush, green forest and water that is that beautiful mediterranean turquoise color that almost seems fake. There are tons of hiking trails and walkways to see all of the beauty the park offers. You can rent a car to get there or you can take a tour bus from just about any city in which you’re visiting. Whichever you choose, just make sure you make it here. It’s sincerely breathtaking!

Croatia is a completely under-rated and stunning country, and I can’t wait to return! There are so many other cities I haven’t been to in Croatia, but certainly have on my bucket list. That being said, no matter which city you choose to go to, you must go to Croatia! You won’t regret it.
