The Ultimate Guide To Tofino

I had dreamed about exploring Canada’s surf capital, Tofino, British Columbia for as long as I could remember. I would see pictures of if on the internet and I fell in love with it’s beauty and magic. I would daydream about learning to surf and seeing orcas all while exploring the west coast of Canada.

In 2019, I finally got to live out my dream of seeing Tofino, when I moved to the small surf town on Vancouver Island, for the summer. While I was there I worked at Tourism Tofino where I learned everything about the area. My summer in Tofino was magical, I spent every day admiring the ocean, smelling fresh cedar trees, and watching bald eagles soar in the sky. I learned to surf, saw majestic wildlife like, bears, bald eagles, orcas, and otters, visited Hot Springs Cove, wandered the rainforest and more. If you love beautiful beaches, outdoor activities, and wildlife encounters, you need to add Tofino to your bucket list.

As a Tofino tourism expert, I put together this Ultimate Guide to Tofino to help you plan your trip. This is a long post with literally everything you need to know about what to do in Tofino. Grab a glass of wine or a cup of tea and let’s dive in. If you want to start planning your trip to Tofino now, purchase my Travel Planner now.

The Ultimate Guide To Tofino

Things to do in Tofino:

For being a small town, there are heaps of things to do in Tofino. It is a great location for anyone who loves wildlife and the outdoors. Downtown Tofino is pretty charming, and while there may not be a lot of shops to check out, the ones that are there are pretty special. Here are my top things to do in Tofino.

Surf

As I mentioned, Tofino is the surf capital of Canada. Surfers of all skill travel far and wide to come and surf on the beautiful beaches of Tofino. So it only makes sense that while you’re there, you take the time to learn how to surf. There are serval dope surf companies that offer lessons throughout the whole year in Tofino, and I highly recommend booking a lesson with one or more of them, or just renting a board and wet suit.

Check out these Surf Companies:

  1. Tofino Paddle Surf – my personal favourite
  2. Surf Sisters
  3. Pacific Surf Co
  4. Live to Surf
  5. Tofino Surf Adventure

Learning to surf was one of the best things that I have ever done. It is so refreshing to be in the water and the rush you get from surfing is indescribable. Check out my blog post on Why Surfing Should Be on Your Bucket List.

Pro Tip: Be gentle with yourself when you are learning to surf. It is hard! But with consistency and positivity, you will see progress.

Hit The Beaches

There are six beaches in Tofino: Cox Bay, South Chesterman Beach, North Chesterman Beach, Mackenzie Beach, Middle Beach and Tonquin Beach. All of the beaches are gorgeous and I recommend walking, biking, or just enjoying all of them while you are in Tofino. This is a great thing to do in Tofino in winter as well as the summer months. Another great way to enjoy the beaches is to make a bonfire on the beach. Grab your friends, smores and enjoy the sunset and stars with a bonfire. Please check to see if there is a fire ban before proceeding.

To rent bikes check out Tofino Bike Co, or TOF Cycle Co

Safety Tip: Swimming isn’t really recommended at most of the beaches in Tofino due to the strong currents, cold temperatures, and lack of lifeguards. If you really want to swim, Mackenzie Beach is probably going to be your best bet. But don’t forget a wet suit, the water is cold all year long.

All of the beaches are a little different. If you want to watch surfers or go surfing in Tofino check out Cox Bay, South Chesterman Beach, and North Chesterman Beach. These three beaches are the only beaches in Tofino that have big enough waves to surf. If you want to check out some tide pools and enjoy a calmer paddleboarding adventure, check out Mackenzie Beach. And if you are interested in a short rainforest hike to a more private beach, check out Middle Beach and Tonquin Beach.

Tofino Secrets: While I was working in with Tourism Tofino, I would tell guests that Cox Bay was my favourite beach in town. However, that isn’t true. I didn’t want a lot of people to go to my favourite beach and overcrowd it. My real favourite beach in Tofino is North Chesterman – it has perfect white floury sand, great waves, and nice sunset views.

Sea Kayak And Paddleboard

The ocean is a big part of the culture in Tofino, so naturally, another great thing to do in Tofino is get out on the water either by sea kayak or paddleboard.

Paddleboarding is one of my favourite activities, it is a calming physical activity that makes me feel one with the water. While you are in Tofino, you need to check out Tofino Paddle Surf, and either rent a board and suit or take a lesson or guided tour. You can either paddleboard at Mackenzie Beach or through the inlet.

Due to the strong currents in the ocean most of the sea kayaking companies do not rent out kayaks to anyone who isn’t able to perform a self-rescue in a kayak. However, the companies do offer guided tours that are perfect for all skill levels. They offer different tours that allow you to explore the area around Tofino and some of the remote islands.

If sea kayaking is what you want to do check out, Tofino Sea Kayaking, Remote Passages, and Paddle West. If you love bears check out Black Bear Kayaking and go on a kayaking adventure where you watch wild black bears eating. How cool is that?!

Hike

While you are in one of the most beautiful places in the world get out and enjoy some Tofino hikes! Ok, there is technically only one trail that is in Tofino, but there are other trails close by that you can check out. There one trail that is in Tofino is called the Tonquin trail. It starts at the community centre and goes down to Tonquin beach, and Middle Beach. The trail is fairly short, but there are some gorgeous lookout points and a small secret beach that can be visited at low tided.

The national park beside Tofino has some great trails that you can check out – I’ll talk more about that in the next section. Located about 40 minutes from Tofino is the town of Ucluelet, and it is home to one of the most popular trails on Vancouver Island – The Wild Pacific Trail. This is a stunning trail that is about 10 km one way. It has giant ancient cedars and gorgeous rocky coastlines. If you don’t want to hike the whole thing, I recommend doing the 2 km Lighthouse Loop.

If you don’t mind taking a boat ride, there are some more rustic trails on some of the remote islands. Meares Island has two great trails you can check out, The Big Tree Trail and Lone Cone Trail. The Big Tree Trail is about 3 kms on a boardwalk that allows you to be mesmerized by the biggest cedar trees in the Clayoquot area. Lone Cone trail is a tough trail that takes you up to the top of Lone Cone Mountain. While the hike is very difficult, the views are completely worth it. That being said I recommend only hiking this trail on a clear day – any fog will stop you from seeing the amazing views, defeating the purpose of hiking up the mountain.

Explore Pacific Rim National Park

As you drive into Tofino, you actually drive through the Pacific Rim National Park. This national park is absolutely beautiful. It is home to the rainforest, white sandy beaches, and amazing wildlife such as cougars, black bears, wolves, bald eagles, giant slugs and more. The park has some excellent trails that you can hike on that take you through the rainforest, and out to the beaches.

Some of the best hikes in Pacific Rim National Park, in my opinion, are:

  • The Nuu-chah-nulth Trail – this is my favourite trail in the park, it is a 5 km hike (2.5 km each way) on a boardwalk that starts at Wickinnaish Beach and goes to Florencia Bay lookout point. I recommend going a little further and enjoy some time at Florencia Bay. It is perfect.
  • The Bog Trail – This is a quick hike in the area that is known as the bog. There is acid in the soil in this area so the trees and plants grow differently here than anywhere else in the rainforest. It is super unique and a must-see.
  • Combers Beach Trail – Another quick trail that goes through the rain forest to Combers Beaches.

The National Park has some stunning beaches that you need to stop by while you are in the area. Just like the beaches in Tofino, swimming is not recommended at them, but safe surfing is encouraged. Definitely stop by the famous Long Beach, and also visit Wickaninnish Beach and my personal favourite beach in the park, Florencia Bay.

Fun Fact: Some scenes in The Twilight Sages, New Moon where filmed in the Pacific Rim National Park!

Hot Springs Cove

A must-do in Tofino is to visit Hot Springs Cove. The thing that most people don’t know about the hot spring cove in Tofino, is that it actually isn’t even in Tofino. The natural hot spring is located about a 2-hour boat ride (or 20-minute seaplane ride) and a 30-minute hike through the rainforest away from Tofino. The journey to get there makes visiting the hot springs an excellent day adventure to take while you are exploring Tofino.

Everything about Hot Springs Cove is magical. While you make your way over there, either by boat or plane, you get to admire the stunning beauty of the remote islands and you might even see some wildlife. After you dock, you get to walk 30 minutes along a boardwalk through a gorgeous rainforest.

One of the great things about the hot springs in Tofino is that it is open rain or shine all year around. This not only makes it the perfect activity to do in the rain, but it is also one of the great Tofino winter activities. So if you are planning to explore Tofino in November, definitely put this on your Tofino bucket lList.

There are a few different tour companies that will take you to the hot springs, either by boat or seaplane. I got to travel to the hot springs by boat and seaplane and honestly, both were very special experiences. If you want to take a boat check out Jamie’s Whaling Station and if you are interested in taking a seaplane to check out Atleo

Whale And Bear Tour

Whale watching in Tofino was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. Fun fact: In Tofino, you can see orcas, humpback whales and grey whales. The wildlife and environment are so protected in the Tofino area, and really all over Vancouver Island, which is why it is the perfect location to see some of the most beautiful creatures in the wild.

Whale and black bears are two of the most popular animals in the area. There are a good amount of tour companies that will take you out and see them in a safe and respectful way. These tours are seasonal, which makes them the perfect activity to do while you explore Tofino in summer months.

Both of these tours are boat tours, but the whale and bear tours are separate tours because they go to different areas. Whale tours go out into the ocean, while bear tours head into the inlets to see the bears when they come to the shore to feed.

While on either a bear or whale tour, you will get the opportunity to potentially see other wildlife, like seals, sea lions, bald eagles, wolves, sea birds, otters and more.

While I was living in Tofino I went out on wildlife tours with more than one company and I have to say that my favourite company was The Whale Centre. I really enjoyed their guides, they were both entertaining and informative.

Explore Downtown Tofino

The town of Tofino might be very small, but it has some super cute shops and bakeries to check out. I highly recommend visiting the store Merge, it is like Pinterest exploded and turned into an adorable hipster shop. They have vintage clothing, self-care items, books, cool mugs, custom-designed clothing, and more. Check out their website while you wait to visit them in person.

As you explore the downtown, be sure to stop by the first street dock for amazing views of the harbour, and Meares Island. Also, stop by the Totem Pole at the end of Third Street and see if you can see any bald eagles.

Treat Yo’ Self To Some Relaxation

If you need some R & R or are looking for romantic things to do in Tofino, I highly recommend taking some time to enjoy the luxurious Ancient Cedars Spa at the stunning 5-star hotel, The Wickaninnish Inn. The spa offers different spa packages, that include different treatments and yoga practices. While you are being pampered by professionals take some time to enjoy the Steam Cave. It will open and cleanse your pores and leave your body feeling completely rested and relaxed.

The Ancient Cedar Spa is pricey. A cheaper option for some relaxation in Tofino is to follow my little DIY spa day.

Cass’ DIY Tofino Spa Day:

Step one: Wake up and take a walk along one a beach.

Step two: Head over to Long Beach Lodge Surf Club Adventure Centre and purchase a $20-day pass. Here you can enjoy luxurious change rooms, hot showers, sauna, in-ground outdoor hot pool, cappuccino bar and fitness centre.

Step three: Bring a book and beach towel with you and when you are done with the Surf Club, walk out to Cox Bay and enjoy a good book while you listen to the waves crashing on the shore.

Step four: Stop by Tuff City Squeeze and get a refreshing handmade smoothie or acai bowl.

Step five: Take a yoga class at Coastal Bliss Yoga. Side note, this is my favourite yoga studio that I have ever been to in my life. It is made of cedar and smells amazing and all of the teachers are very knowledgable and personal.

Step six: Grab some firewood and enjoy watching the waves and stars at a bonfire on North Chesterman Beach.

Places to eat in Tofino

There are some really great Tofino restaurants. Being right on the ocean the area has a lot of great seafood dishes, like fish tacos. Honestly, I miss the fresh fish tacos a lot, and now that I started thinking about fish tacos I’m craving them. Anyways…because I got to live in Tofino for a few months I had plenty of time to explore the Tofino food scene. Here are some of the Tofino restaurants I recommend you try while you are exploring Tofino.

Sea Monster Noodle Bar

If you love noodles you need to try Sea Monster. Their Asian fusion cuisine is some of the best I have ever had. They offer a variety of noddle and rice bowls as well as steam buns. My favourite dish at Sea Monster is Dan Dan, which is a wheat noodle bowl that has pork belly, and some sauces and veggies. Dan Dan is a great meal on a cozy rainy day.

Wild Side Grill

Wild Side Grill is an amazing food truck that serves dope burgers, fish and chips, fish tacos and more. They pride themselves on serving fresh local ingredients year-round. They had my favourite fish tacos in the area so definitely order some while you are there. Also, their grilled chicken sandwich they have is a gift from heaven.

The SandBar Bistro

If you want to watch the waves while enjoying delicious food and cocktails stop by The SandBar Bistro at Long Beach Lodge. Located on Cox Bay, the SandBar is Tofino’s ultimate outdoor, beach-side patio offering casual table or to-go dining with incredible ocean views, sunsets and bonfires. It is rustic chic fo sho! I recommend visiting them for happy hour.

Shelter

A great option for a sit-down dinner is Shelter. This Tofino restaurant is a must eat at in my books. The food was great, the staff was friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and welcoming. Definitely order the Truffle Frites (house-cut fries, white truffle & parmesan dijon mayo) for your appetizer.

Tacofino

Tacofino is a legendary taco truck that started in Tofino and has spread throughout Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. If you are visiting Tofino in the summer, expect there to be a huge line at this food truck pretty much all day. Although the lines might be long, the food is worth it. I recommend getting the grilled chicken burrito.

Pro Tip: Take your food to go and enjoy it at the beach. Mackenzie Beach and North Chesterman Beach are both within walking distance.

Chocolate Tofino

If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, enjoy Tofino’s hidden gem, Chocolate Tofino. They have amazing chocolates and some of the best ice cream in the world. I recommend ordering some passion fruit dark chocolates and getting a scope or two of the Chocolate Salted Carmel ice cream.

Places To Stay In Tofino

There are a few really nice places to stay in Tofino. However, it is important to know that there is a shortage of places to hotels compared to the number of guests that visit Tofino in the summer. This also includes campgrounds. It is a great idea to book your accommodation as far in advance as possible. Here are some accommodation options that I recommend you stay at.

Middle Beach Lodge

Middle Beach Lodge is located on  40 acres of secluded west coast oceanfront. It is a great option for anyone planning a romantic getaway to Tofino. Middle Beach Lodge features almost a mile of private beach, rugged headlands, two magnificent lodges, and twenty rustic self-contained cabins.

Pacific Sands Beach Resort

Pacific Sands Beach Resort is a perfect resort right on Cox Bay. The resort offers guest traditional amenities as well as surf lessons, yoga classes, bike rentals and more.

Wild Pods

Wild Pods take glamping to a whole other level. These luxury pods can be your home away from home while you explore Tofino. Each dome is beautifully decorated and situated directly on the waterfront featuring stunning views.

Mackenzie Beach Resort

If you are wanting to camp in a tent or RV, then check out Mackenzie Beach Resort. This campground is located right on Mackenzie Beach and is close to food, surf shops and a yoga studio.

What To Pack

No matter what time of year you plan to visit Tofino here are some items that you need to pack.

  • Raincoat – it’s the rainforest! There is rain all year long, just less in the summer.
  • Cozy sweaters. Even in the summer, the nights can get a wee bit chilly.
  • Running shoes for hiking.
  • Flashlight. Tofino doesn’t have a lot of light pollution, so if you are going out at night it is handy to have a flashlight.
  • Reusable water bottles and bags. Vancouver Island is moving toward being plastic-free #yasssss, so be prepared and bring your own water bottles and bags.
  • Camera. There are a lot of beautiful things to take photos of.

Things To Know Before You Head To Tofino

From working at Tourism Tofino, I discovered that a lot of people had the same questions or reactions to certain things about Tofino. Here are a few things that I think are important for everyone to know before heading to Tofino.

  • Tofino is super expensive. Like really expensive. Food is expensive, tours are expensive, accommodations are expensive etc. Things might be expensive but don’t let that stop you from exploring one of the most beautiful places in the world. Make a budget and be smart with your spending.
  • It is small. Tofino is a lot smaller then it looks on the internet. It takes about 30 seconds to drive through the downtown, and there are only about 2000 locals that live there year-round.
  • Each year Tofino sees more than 600,000 guests.
  • Tofino is made up of the rich history of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations.
  • People in Tofino real care about the environment and wildlife, so please respect it while you are there.
  • You can not sleep in your car or RV anywhere in Tofino. If you want to sleep in your car you need to book a campsite.
  • Having a car with you is a super smart idea. There is no public transport, and one taxi in Tofino. The beaches are about 7 kms from town and the Pacific Rim park is about 15 – 20 kms. So if you are planning to go back and forth, you are going to want to rent a car. The only place to rent a car is the Tofino Airport.
  • The weather in Tofino is fairly moderate all year. Tofino is in the rainforest, so it does rain a lot all year round. It does rain in the summer, but not as much as in the winter. If it rains while you are there don’t let it bug you. Embrace it – the rain helps keep Tofino green and beautiful.
  • Storm season is only in the winter.
  • Even though there are a lot more people in the summer, I think that the summer is the best time to visit Tofino. The days are longer, there is more sunshine and a lot of the business closed in the winter.
  • Tofino is in a Tsunami area. Click here, to sign up for Tsunami alerts before you visit.

Final Thoughts On Tofino

Tofino is really something special. If you want to see one of Canada’s many hidden gems, then you need to visit Tofino. Go and be one with the rainforest and waves of the ocean. Be in awe of the wildlife, admire the sunsets and let your soul be nourished.

Wishing you happy travels – where ever you go,
