5 Outdoor Adventures To Go On In Mexico
1. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve
“Located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast just south of Tulum, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is an outdoor adventure experience unlike anywhere else in Mexico. Officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sian Ka’an is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and offers the unique opportunity to explore a tranquil nature reserve. While visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to observe marine animals, wildlife, and exotic plant varieties all in their native habitat.
Due to its remote location, the easiest way to explore Sian Ka’an is through a guided eco-tour, which is a full-day wildlife expedition offering a small boat tour, snorkeling, and nature observation. On the tour you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife including crocodiles, dolphins, sea turtles, stingrays, starfish, and native birds—all in their natural habitat.
Visiting Sian Ka’an is such a unique experience and offers an exclusive way to discover the untouched natural beauty of the Mexican Caribbean. It’s such a special place where you’ll get to appreciate the beauty of wide-open blue water and an undeveloped natural landscape. It’s perfect for the nature lover and those looking for an outdoorsy adventure.” Submitted by Allison from Viva La Travelista.
2. Swimming With Whale Sharks Holbox
“Any animal-related tourist attractions abroad can be challenging to navigate. Figuring out which ones are ethical is difficult. If you’re interested in swimming with whale sharks Holbox is a great choice though. You can join a tour which will take you out to the open ocean where whale sharks gather.
The exact places change every day so finding whale sharks is likely but not guaranteed. You can even get in the water with them although you’re not allowed to touch or disturb them. Only one person per tour is usually in the water at the same time and you’ll always have a guide with you. The experience is truly magical and one of the best things you can do in Mexico.” Submitted by Victoria from Guide Your Travel.
3. Las Coloradas & Rio Lagartos, Mexico
“Visiting the pink lakes of Las Coloradas is a Mexico bucket list experience. As they are located in a remote part of the country, many go on a day trip from Merida, the closest big city to Las Coloradas.
The easiest way to visit is in a rental car, which takes about 3.5 hours, but by bus, it’s closer to five hours. Without your own car, you’ll want to consider staying overnight at a hotel in Rio Lagartos, Mexico, a pueblo (small town) next to Las Coloradas.
To see Las Coloradas, you’ll depart on a boat tour from Rio Lagartos (meaning Alligator River) — as the pink lakes are only accessible by boat. There is a boat dock along the river where boats wait to take visitors out; tours cost about $250 pesos ($13USD) and last about two hours.
The boat trip to the Mexico pink lakes of Las Coloradas from the dock is only about 15 minutes. You’ll stay at the pink lakes for about 30 minutes, then do a one-hour tour of Rio Lagartos, where you’ll see a variety of birds, mangroves and of course, alligators.” Contributed by Shelley of Travel To Merida
4. Teotihuacan – outdoor adventures to go on in Mexico
“If you’re visiting Mexico City but seeking an outdoor adventure, you can’t miss the spectacular temple complex at Teotihuacan, a short bus ride away. An ideal day trip any time of year, Teotihuacan was originally constructed prior to the Aztec arrival in Mexico. Many of its structures are still standing today, making it one of the best-preserved pre-Columbian cities in the world.
Adventure-seekers will love clambering all over the huge Pyramid of the Moon and Pyramid of the Sun: get your heart-rate up a bit and enjoy the soaring panoramic views from the top of each pyramid. You should also spend some time wandering along the Avenue of the Dead, where you can see various other temples and ruins, including the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, or Temple of the Feathered Serpent. The ruins are in astoundingly good condition – just be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds!” Submitted by Tegan + Alex from Why Not Walk Travel Guides.
5. Chichen Itza
“Chichen Itza is the ultimate outdoor adventure in Mexico. Chichen Itza is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. These ancient Mayan ruins are incredible and worth checking out.
Chichen Itza is a great day trip from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. It is about two and half hours from each location.
Chichen Itza is believed to be over 1500 years old and was inhabited by the Mayan people. It existed for centuries until the Spanish conquered it in the 1600’s. The Mayan people were advanced in astronomy and mathematics. The buildings they designed were architectural wonders. El Castillo is the tallest pyramid at Chichen Itza. There are 91 stairs on each side which add up to 365. These steps represent the calendar year. On the spring and fall equinox a shadow will fall on the pyramid that casts the shape of a serpent.
Exploring the ancient ruins of this Mayan city is a perfect outdoor adventure in Mexico.” Submitted by Lisa from Planning Away
