Affordable Travel: Tips for Budget Travelling

When people find out that I am a travel blogger, I often get asked about ways to make traveling less expensive. While living the VIP luxury life is AHmazing, not spending all your savings on vacation is an awesome idea. I am here to tell you that affordable travel is real and you too can travel cheaply. You just need to be smart, research your options and do a little (a lot of) planning. I put together some great tips to help with lowering the cost of traveling.

15 Simple Tips To Affordable Travel:

  1. Stay at hostels not hotels. You will save money and meet heaps and heaps of cool people.
  2. Travel to countries during their “off season”. Do not go on vacation on March break.
  3. Skip the touristy restaurants. Eat where the locals do, or buy food at the grocery store and make it in the communal kitchen at your hostel.
  4. Forget about Uber/Taxis and take public transport. #buslife
  5. Research flights and hostels. Don’t just book the first flight and hostel you find. It is very important to explore your options. Check out multiple flight sites, and read the reviews on the hostels.
  6. Book your flight on a Tuesday around 12 am. You are likely to get the cheapest price at this time.
  7. Make your own adventure. Skip the tourist sites, tours etc. and research some free activities you can do in the place you are traveling to. Find some awesome hikes, free museums, and live music at a bar.
  8. Find out what the locals do for fun. Maybe there is a gorgeous less touristy beach or an awesome bar with karaoke on Taco Tuesday. P.S. if you find this bar please let me know where it is immediately.
  9. Plan as much as possible. If you want to stick to a budget, I recommend planning out as much of your trip as possible. Plan out your budget total, how much you will spend on food, flights, accommodations etc. Plan what activities you want to do, what meals you will eat etc.
  10. Know what the exchange rate is. This may seem obvious, but a lot of people forget to check this, and they end up spending a lot more than they realize. How many Thai Baht’s are equal to $10 CAD?
  11. Bring a reusable water bottle. You can be hydrated all the time, and never have to buy bottled water.
  12. Volunteer for a free room. There are loads of companies that will offer you a free room, maybe food, in exchange for some work.
  13. Travel light. You won’t have to spend money on baggage fees.
  14. Walk. Walk as much as you can, it’s free and you can experience the city.
  15. Explore less popular destinations. Check out countries and cities that have less tourist, because they will most likely be cheaper.
